Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

This test is done during an office visit and takes about 20 minutes. The procedure is recommended by the American Cancer Society starting at the age of 50, but earlier if there is a family history. A narrow, flexible tube is used to examine the portion of your bowel most prone to disease, particularly the colon where rectal cancer begins. If you are experiencing abdominal pain, bleeding, or changes in bowel habits, your doctor may also request this test.
